Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs) and Home Adaptations

If you or a member of your household has a disability and requires adaptations to your home, financial assistance may be available through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) or veterans’ charity. Please note that there may be regional differences in the process, dependent on your local authority. The notes below should be taken as general guidance only.

  • An assessment must first be completed by an Occupational Therapist (OT) through your local authority or veterans’ charity.
  • The Occupational Therapist will assess your needs and recommend any necessary adaptations.
  • Applications for a Disabled Facilities Grant must be made through your local authority or veterans’ charity.
  • Any proposed adaptations to a Haig Housing property must be submitted to Haig Housing for approval before work can begin. You can find the “Tenant improvement request form” here.
  • The local authority/veterans’ charity and/or its appointed specialists will be responsible for designing, specifying, procuring, and managing any approved adaptation works.
Important Information

Please note that Haig Housing does not carry out Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) adaptation works using its own contractors. All approved adaptation works must be delivered through the local authority‘s DFG process and undertaken by appropriately qualified specialist contractors appointed through that process.

Haig Housing’s role is limited to considering and approving proposed adaptations to its properties. The assessment, design, specification, procurement, project management, and delivery of adaptation works remain the responsibility of the local authority and its appointed specialist contractors.

Haig Housing will not undertake any adaptation works associated with a Disabled Facilities Grant using its internal maintenance contractors. Residents should not arrange or commence any adaptation works independently.

No works should commence until:

  • The Occupational Therapist’s recommendations have been received
  • Funding has been approved through the Disabled Facilities Grant process or through a supporting veterans’ charity
  • Written approval has been provided by Haig Housing; and
  • A specialist contractor has been appointed through the local authority‘s DFG process.
