Little landscapers help planting our new building site’s viewing area
Haig Housing’s new building site of 68 charitably rented homes in Morden, recently hosted local schoolchildren to help with planting a visitors area and learn about site safety.
Our builders United Living have created a viewing area on site where any visitor is able to come and see the site in action without the need of personal protective equipment.
This allows tenants and locals alike a glimpse into the building process of these much needed affordably rented homes being built.
United Living invited thirty schoolchildren from Year 3 of local Morden Primary school to help planting the new visitors viewing gallery.
Tree consultant to the build Sharon Hosegood and Marcus Forster, Haig Housing’s Horticultural Services Manager gave the kids a talk on the importance of trees and plants and how we protect them during the building process. The children wore hard hats, high-vis jackets and gloves whilst getting their hands messy and doing some planting. The kids were very enthusiastic, thoroughly enjoying themselves and didn’t want to leave!
James Richardson, Haig Housing CEO presented them with participation certificates and after some refreshments they went back to school with their teachers. We would like to thank all the builders and the site team who helped build the area as well as Morden Primary school parents who agreed to let the kids take part in this event.
Teachers Mrs Piet Barbour said ”It was a great day and fantastic opportunity for the children. The site staff were very welcoming and extremely helpful. Thanks so much for all the work you had put into the children’s visit. They really had a great time.”
Feedback from kids included that they “loved planting all the flowers and getting muddy”, “digging and working as a team”, “I loved gardening and planting”.
The Viewing gallery will soon be open to the local community to view the construction from a safe zone. Further information and dates for viewing will be sent out in United Living’s monthly newsletters to local residents and displayed on the information boards outside the site, where we are also displaying some of the local history of the Haig estate.
United Living were appointed as main contractor for the new build of 68 new homes in 2017 and the new homes are due to be completed and ready for occupation by ex-service
persons and their families in June 2019.
