In May 2010 Tirthraj was serving with 1RGR in the Nahr-e-Saraj (South) region of Helmand Province, southern Afghanistan. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated near to Tirthraj whilst he was deployed on a foot patrol injuring him badly.
After being evacuated to Camp Bastion doctors had to amputate one of his legs through the knee. He also suffered several shrapnel injuries. From there he was evacuated back to the UK for further treatment.
Following medical discharge from the Army, Tirthraj wanted to live in the Maidstone area with his wife and two children. They were interested in HHT’s Shared Ownership Scheme which allowed Tirthraj to retain a large amount of his AFCS and PAX payouts for the future security of him and his family.
The chosen house was deemed suitable for his requirements and the family received the keys in December 2012.
