Hero: Michael Swain

Michael was in stationed in Sangin Afghanistan in November 2009 when he was severly wounded by an I.E.D whilst on foot patrol. He lost both legs above the knee and suffered severe shrapnel wounds to his left arm and nerve damage to his right.

After the incident Michael was flown to camp bastion where he underwent long and extensive surgery, then after two days flown to Birmingham Selly Oak hospital where he spent the next 5 and half weeks. From Selly oak Michael was transferred to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court where he still attends on a regular basis.

Michael is now looking to do more charity work in the future and would like to try different sports and see where that leads. Michael said “Hopefully once my rehabilitation has finished I can carry on where I left off before I went to Afghanistan”.

After much searching and several properties making the shortlist, Michael has now bought a bungalow in the Luton area. Haig Housing Trust helped him in his property search, paid for all the legal fees and is on hand for advice on adaptations for the property, in partnership with the MOD and Michael’s occupational therapists.
